Configuring CUPS Printers

We have our printers hanging of our LINUX server so that we can use USB printers as if they were network printers which, I suppose they are as soon as you connect then to a server.

Sometimes we get problems with the printers because we turn them off or something doesn’t print just how we want it. This is mainly because we have set the print queue to RAW so that the jobs get passed strait though so that we don’t have to worry about the drivers (I don’t actually know what is going on here but this is just what I remember from the conversation with Symon a long time ago).

To solve the problems we have to go in to the web based CUPS management console. This for future reference is how you can access the page.

  1. Open the terminal
  2. Create an ssh tunnel by typing $ ssh development -g -L 8631:localhost:631 (yes $ is the prompt you don’t need to type it)
  3. Open a browser
  4. Go to http://localhost:8631
  5. Manage your print jobs.

I have just realised that development is the name of our server if anyone else is looking at this, you will have to substitute development for the name of IP address of your server

You will need a user name and password to login keeping with tradition the user name is root and the password is the same as normal.
